"Most studios advertise that each student is encouraged to do his or her best, and at the same time, each is allowed to progress at his or her own pace. Many will tell you that the martial arts develop self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-control. Some might even have homework rooms and family events. The Kempokan offers all that and more. What the other studios don't have is the dedicated staff that you find at The Kempokan. We're proud of our daughter. I'd like to take credit for getting her involved in the martial arts, but the truth of the matter is, she's at The Kempokan because she wants to be."

About the School

Kempokan Martial Arts of Newington opened in 2003. After 10 years of teaching professionally in Glastonbury, Sensei Benjamin Thomas wanted to implement some revolutionary ideas in teaching the traditions of martial arts.

Our mission:

  • Create a place where students can get the most comprehensive martial arts training possible, experience success and accomplishment without compromising the joy of learning.
  • Create a learning space that is family friendly, open and accessible to students of all abilities.
  • Develop connections with other talented and motivated martial artists to improve the level of martial arts training available in Connecticut.

Attendees of a Shaolin Fan Seminar taught by world famous Chinese movie star and kungfu Master Hu Jianqiang. This is just one of many special events held at the school to help bring a wide variety of positive and exciting martial arts experiences to our students.

In addition to pioneering revolutionary new programs for younger students, we have established specialty classes for people interested in exploring other types of martial arts.  Because of our experience in the martial arts world we have had the good fortune to be able to forge bonds with some of the best and most highly regarded practitioners in New England, and guest presenters are invited to the school to share their knowledge and expertise in a variety of areas.  Past guests have included: Two-time Chinese All-around Champion and movie star Hu Jianqiang, Taichi Master and author John Loupos, Sensei Michael Ferreira of 100% Martial Arts, Sensei Jonathan Metcalf of Integrity Martial Arts, and “Karate Hour” children's book illustrator Bill Thomson, among others.
